The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert about the Chikungunya virus spread due to climate change and has reported that it is preparing seven vaccines to fight against this pathogen that It could put 4 billion people at risk.
The chikungunya virus is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes and is responsible for an infection that is increasing as temperatures rise in different countries. The WHO has highlighted that the risk of infection is increasing and that nearly 4 billion people are at risk worldwide, posing a significant threat to global public health. Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, Head of the Emerging Diseases and Zoonoses Unit of the WHO, explained that the risk of infection is increasing due to the current distribution of these vectors in the European area and in North America. According to the WHO, the conditions that drive this risk are there and will continue to increase, so long-term strategies are needed to prevent the spread of the virus.
“We may have more outbreaks in the near future and it would be useful to design a long-term strategy, for example, modifying urban areas” to prevent the spread of the Aedes mosquito and its bites, “said Dr. Van Kerkhove.

Vaccines to stop the Chikungunya virus

WHO is working on seven vaccines to fight the chikungunya virus, three of which have passed the clinical trial phase. According to the expert, more financing is needed to make them a reality in a reasonable time, given the enormous risks of the Chikungunya infection for pregnant women, babies, and adolescents, in addition to the high mortality rates it causes in males. The expansion of the chikungunya virus is one more example of how the climate change is affecting public health around the world. High temperatures and extreme weather conditions are creating the perfect environment for the proliferation of mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as chikungunya, dengue and zika. Given this situation, it is necessary that governments and public health organizations adopt measures to combat the spread of these viruses.
