The eSIM brings numerous advantages to the user, allowing the activation of a mobile communications contract quickly and easily or several contracts at the same time, for example, for private and professional purposes. In this sense, Giesecke+Devrient foresees that all mobile devices, such such as mobile phones, tablets or smart watches, integrate this last type of eSIM cards in a short time, as Apple has already decided in its new iPhone 14. “For us it is clear that the conventional plastic SIM card will be replaced in the future by the eSIM, which is more environmentally friendly and will become the new standard”, explains Philipp Schulte, Head of Connectivity and IoT at G+D.

eSIM

eSIM cards are a SIM module permanently installed in the device as a chip. To activate an eSIM, the user simply downloads their specific SIM profile from the mobile network provider directly onto it.

G+D has already managed 100 million eSIM downloads from users through its platform

Likewise, this type of card also contributes to sustainability and the reduction of CO2 emissions, since it is an environmentally friendly solution as it does not require the use of plastic, packaging or transport for delivery.
