Types and categories of dental implants

The types of dental implants differ according to different factors. It can be because of where they are placed, how they are placed or even because of the materials they are made of. Let’s see all the categories and the types that are within them:

Endosseous implants

The most employed are placed on the maxillary bones through a surgical intervention, with its corresponding crown once they have been completely integrated:
Laminates: not recommended in case of total tooth loss, they are mainly used for central incisors in the maxilla.Screws: the most used in all centers. It is a screw made of titanium, biocompatible. It can be placed on several consecutive teeth without any problem and it gives very good results thanks to the material it is made of.Cylindrical: They have small holes for the bone to grow and fix them. They are slow, but their integration is one of the best.

Subperiosteal implants

Are metal frames which are placed in the jawbone, below the gum tissue. They are used in people who cannot resort to traditional dentures. However, they are used less and less due to their difficult osseointegration and the complexity of the surgery to place them.

Implants according to materials

Titanium implants: They are the most used, since titanium is a lighter metal than steel, easy to mold and very hard. What is most in its favor is that titanium is highly biocompatible, which means that it is very rare for the body to reject it.Zirconium implants: a material with surprising durability that prevents the formation of bacterial plaque and that biointegrates thanks to the chemical bond it forms with the bone. It is used in people allergic to titanium mainly.

Implants according to placement method

Implants in 2 phases: As its name suggests, this method consists of first placing the dental implant so that it integrates into the bone. Once 3 to 6 months have passed, the abutment and crown are placed to finish.Immediate loading implants: everything is done in the moment. The implant is placed, then the abutment and finally the crown. The only requirement is that it be an area with a good amount of bone and without infections. These are the main types of dental implants that exist according to the different criteria that exist. It is worth mentioning that dentistry is a field in continuous evolution, so there is always room for new techniques and new materials.
