According to the franchise history of Neon Genesis EvangelionOn September 13, 2000, the second of the three great events took place on Earth as a result of the intervention of the First Ancestral Race. This event was a result of the Contact Experiment performed on Adam by the Katsuragi Expedition, led by Dr. Katsuragi, Misato’s father.
The experiment woke Adam up, generating an explosion that melted the Antarctic ice caps and shifted the Earth’s axis. Scientists subdued Adam, but only succeeded in limiting the damage and preventing the complete extinction of humanity. Sea level rise, tsunamis, and the resulting armed conflicts wiped out half the human population and had huge geopolitical implications for the nations of Earth.
Following Second Impact and the resulting wars, the Japanese government abandoned any hope of restoring old Tokyo. Instead, the Japanese capital was moved to the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, which was renamed “Tokyo-2”. Construction of the new capital began in 2001, and by 2003, Tokyo-2 was serving as the center of Japanese government.
Even after the wars, the environmental effects of Second Impact remained. The shift in the Earth’s axis of rotation changed the way we experience the seasons around the world. In Japan, autumn and winter disappeared, as the country was fixed in a perpetual state of summer. The song of cicadas, long a feature of Japanese summers, became a fixture throughout the year.
